- SYMPATHY NOTE
Richard "Rick" Hess, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018. Rick and May, "the love of his life", who worked next to him through many business ventures, were married in 1962. Their three children, Rick (Vicki), Shari Wurst (Brian) and Matt were just the start of the family they are very proud of.
Then came the grandchildren, Brian Wurst (Ali), Sandi Kreider (Travis) and the four Hess brothers, Richie (Leslie), Garrett, Jake and Luke; four great-grandchildren, Katrina Kreider, Marley Hess, River Hess and the new Mr. Hess (not born yet as of this date).
Rick is survived by his brothers, Don and David; sister Judy Chiamardas (Jim); sister-in-law, Terry Hess; as well as several nieces and nephews. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Richard C. Hess and Shirley Hess Williams; his brother, Ron: and step-father, Gordon Williams.
One of Rick's business ventures was the "Goldfish Connection" website that he started in 1997. Rick imported very fancy, show quality goldfish from around the world and sold them on the website. It was the first goldfish auction website on the internet. Safe, reliable goldfish medications and water conditioners were not available at that time for his goldfish customers, so along with a microbe biologist, he developed a line of goldfish products called "Aqua Meds", which he also sold on the internet.
Rick was commissioned to write a goldfish book for "Animal Planet" and another for a Japanese Publishing company for the English speaking market. Rick co-authored "Fancy Goldfish" which was rated by goldfish authorities as the best goldfish book published in fifty years. Thousands of copies were sold around the world. May was right next to Rick using her editing skills to complete the books. Rick and May sold the Goldfish Connection in 2001 and Aqua Meds in 2016 and retired.
It was Rick's wish that the funeral services be private for the convenience of his family. The arrangements are being handled by the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc. – East. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 1645 West 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
