Thomas L. Hertel

Thomas L. Hertel, age 71, of Harborcreek, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2018. He was born in Erie on November 8, 1946, son of the late John and Theresa Hertel.

Tom was a 1964 graduate of Cathedral Prep and then went on to graduate from Edinboro University with a degree in Secondary Education in all Sciences. He received his Masters in Education and his M.B.A. from Gannon University. Tom was a teacher at Iroquois, Academy, Tech Memorial and Collegiate Academy High Schools. He was a professor at the Universities of Penn State Behrend, Gannon, and Mercyhurst North East.

Tom loved his family, and at one time, he worked five jobs to help his daughter with medical bills. Tom was a man of faith, and was adored by his wife, students and friends. He grew up at Our Lady of Mercy R. C. Church and attended First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant with his wife. Tom enjoyed woodworking and working in his yard. Geology was his favorite of earth sciences, studying rocks and stones. He learned to love trees working with his father at Hertel Nursery.

Tom is lovingly survived by his wife, Audrey Hertel; cousins, Tim Seward, who was like a son to Tom, Tracey Lamont, and Laura Sroka; and his two beloved cats, CoToos and Butterscotch. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Kirsten Conrad, and Gretchen DeHart.

A Memorial Service will be announced in the Fall. Arrangements are being handled by the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Rd.

The founder of the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., Constantine "Gus" Dusckas, was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, on July 22, 1915, the son of Greek immigrants. It has been noted that the Dusckas family had a close relationship with the Drake family of oil well fame.
