Lester A. Holowienko

Lester A. "Les" Holowienko, age 73, of Erie, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, December 2, 2018, following an extended illness. He was born in Rygroyd, Poland on September 1, 1945, the son of the late Peter and Leokadia Mroczek Holowienko.

In 1948 as a young boy, Les immigrated to the United States with his family aboard the SS Botary, arriving and processed at Ellis Island. He graduated from Gannon College and served as a veteran of the US Army as a medic, during the Vietnam Conflict. Les worked with the Governor's Veterans Outreach Program for 25 years. He also was the proprietor of Chrisandra's and Sophia's Tavern. Les was a longtime member of the Huzar Club and a 20 year member of AA. He enjoyed gambling especially playing blackjack at Seneca Allegany and in Las Vegas. Les was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

Les was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Henning; and one brother, Anthony Holowienko. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Chris Smith Holowienko; his children, Steven Holowienko, and Leah Pursell (Tom); two grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Pursell; two sisters, Teri Cox (Jerry), and Barbara Eisweirth (Donald); good friend, Donald Chrispen; his other son, Terrence Cooley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to attend a Graveside Interment at Girard Cemetery on Saturday, May 18 at 1 pm with Military Honors rendered by the Girard American Legion Post 494.y.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Asera Care and Matt from Aspire for the compassionate care given to Les. Memorial contributions may be designated to the ANNA Shelter, 1555 East 10th St., Erie, PA 16511.

The founder of the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., Constantine "Gus" Dusckas, was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, on July 22, 1915, the son of Greek immigrants. It has been noted that the Dusckas family had a close relationship with the Drake family of oil well fame.
